Summary:

 

Recently, the growing number of language learning websites and content formats has generated challenges for teachers in choosing and synthesizing appropriate and unique tools that promote second language acquisition in online learning environments. Wikis provide a kind of shared notebook in which all participants may write, edit, compile and catalog information, negotiate, and perform myriad language functions in an "intensively collaborative" context (Godwin-Jones, 2003). Wikis additionally offer a venue for showcasing student’s work in ePortfolios for both formative and summative assessment and peer and instructor review. Ward Cunningham, creator of the first wiki, describes it as “the simplest online database that could possibly work” (Leuf & Cunningham, 2001). Kessler (2009) further demonstrates that wiki participants exhibit "characteristics associated with autonomy among language learners." As collaborative learning spaces, wikis support good instructional practices and serve as a repository and channel for preselected course information, links, video and audio objects, images, and more.

 

In this four-hour workshop, participants will learn about and explore Wikis as collaborative learning spaces; then set up and design their own Wikis for individual needs, incorporating pedagogical considerations and activities that foster collaboration and the development of L2 skills.
