Creating the Wiki Site: Wiki Settings

Objective: Set permissions on your wiki.

Wikis can be your own private workspace, but they're at their best when they encourage collaboration. Getting the most from your wiki depends on what you do first, so here's how to adjust the settings. Note that we're not going to adjust many of these settings, but we want you to know that they're there. So anything you don't really need to use today (or ever) is going to be marked FYI (for your information).

Task 1: Adjust the Basic Settings

1. Open your wiki. Find the 'Settings' tab. Only you have access to this, since you are the owner!

Note: the wiki you've established does not have a logo in the top left corner. To do this, you need to purchase a subscription.

2. The first screen in the 'Settings' page has information you need to provide:

  • The title of your workspace
  • A description of your workspace, which appears on the login page when you type the url directly into the destination bar
  • A basic selection of colour schemes

  • FYI: An export feature that zips files and pages currently on the wiki

Task 2: Adjust the Access Controls of your Wiki

The 'Access Controls' include:

  • Workspace Security (which you should adjust immediately according to your preferences). Notice that even if you check the 'Anyone' button for public access, you still won't have any visitors if no one knows it's there. So you'll still have to send out invitations.
  • FYI: 'Notifications and RSS' permits users to receive email updates on changes in the wiki. The RSS feed performs the same function using an RSS reader. This, however, is for a different tutorial whch we're not doing today.
  • 'Classroom Accounts' permits you to generate names and corresponding passwords for your students. This circumvents the need for email accounts, especially if you're using the wiki locally, rather that over a distance.

Optional Task: Advanced Settings

FYI: The Advanced Settings' are fun, and can create irreversible changes in your wiki. So don't try them today. Here's what they do:

  • CSS creates appearance rules that all your wiki pages will adhere to. Javascript permits access from external sources to display content in your wiki.
  • Customization is safe for you to tinker with. Here you can control the appearance/availablility of things like the Navigation Bar, comments, and the like.
  • The 'Developer Interface' is best left alone.
  • The 'Delete' button will consign your wiki to oblivion. Don't do it unless you really mean it.
  • If you have purchased a subscription from PBworks, enter your license code on this page. It permits logo display, custom colour schemes, and (most useful) page level permissions.
