Adding links

Objective: Add a link to your organization's home page in such a way that it opens in a new page.

The last task in customizing your home page is to add links to Web sites outside of the wiki (external links).

Task 3: Adding text links to external Web pages on your home page

    1. Click on 'EDIT.'

     2. Click on your page in the area where you want to add the link. If you want to link your outside source to text that you have typed, highlight the text. Example:

     3. Select 'Add Link' from the toolbar.

     4. Copy/paste the URL of the Web page you want to link to. (Don't type it, if possible.)  Press 'Enter' on your keyboard.

    In this example,

    1. is the button you clicked in the previous step,

    2. is how your highlighted text appears after you click 'Add Link,' and

    3. is the input box for the URL of your destination page.

    Your link is now ready.

5. For links to Web pages outside of your Wiki (= external links), select Open in new window and clickSave.

     6. That's it! You have successfully installed an external link on your home page.

Task 4: Providing identification and currency on your home page

Web site viewers need to be able to determine the author and date of Web pages in order to establish reliability and currency. You should therefore follow best practices and add this information on all Web pages.

  1. Position your cursor at the bottom of the home page.
  2. Click the Center button.
  3. Type the Wiki author's name (your name).
  4. In the next line, type the name of your institution.
  5. In the same line, type "date of creation: March 20, 2013" and "date of last update: March 20, 2013". In best practices of Web authoring, both dates are given but only the "update" date is changed when edits are made on the page.
  6. Highlight the text and choose a small font, for example Font 9pt

Task 5: Practice adding a text link by linking to your institution on the home page:

  1. In step 4 above, add an external text link to your institution so that the link opens up in a new page.
