Embedding Audio-Original Recording Using Audacity

Objective: Embed an original mp3 recording on your wiki site.

Here are some possible activities made possible through recording of original mp3s:

  • Teacher recordings for listening practice;
  • Speech and pronunciation practice for students
  • Team recordings of a story, play, or news report;
  • and more!

Audacity: Free sound editing

Audacity is a free sound and editing program for producing original audio recordings and podcasts. This tool can be used in a variety of ways including student collaborative and teacher-generated activities. It can be used for simple recordings and for more involved, complex projects, such as a team oral report.

The advantage of Audacity is that you can work at a technology level that is appropriate for you. Since there is a complete online manual, you can learn as you go.

1. Downloading Audacity and the mp3 LAME Encoder

To use Audacity for recording, you will need to download Audacity and the LAME encoder which allows you to compress the large files created when you record.  Follow the instructions below.

  • In the download box, click on "All Audacity Downloads", and another window will open.
  • Choose your version to download: "Audacity for Windows", "Audacity for Mac", or "Audacity for Linux ", and click on that button.
  • Click on the first file, and then the download window will open.
  • In this window, click on save and the program will save to your desktop.

FAQ: Installation and Plug-Ins-Audacity

Audacity comes with a manual which you can download or use on the Audacity site. In the FAQ section, you will find more information about downloading and installing the LAME mp3 encoder in case you need that. Click on the link below to see that part of the manual.

3. Now You Are Ready to Begin--Recording with Audacity--The Basics: The Control Toolbar

Let's take a look at the basic buttons on one part of the control toolbar. They are the basic record controls. The basic recording buttons in the toolbar across the top of the Audacity opening screen look like those of any basic recorder.  The image below highlights these buttons.

  • The purple buttons facing to the left you will take you back to the beginning of the recording, and those pointing to the right to the end.e

7. Now You Try

  • Construct a welcome message for your class to upload or embed into your class wiki.
  • In this activity, just record your message. You can always add music or another track to this later.
  • Be sure to name your project right away so that you can return to it later if necessary.
  • When you have finished recording, be sure to "save your project as mp3", not as an audacity file.
