Creating and Embedding a Discussion Board

Objective: Embed a discussion board on your wiki.

Discussion boards provide current, easy-to-follow discussions on topics related to your lesson. Discussion Boards also serve as a "gathering place," providing an additional way to collaborate. By the end of this tutorial, you'll be able to add a Nabble discussion board your wiki site, and students will have an interactive forum to discuss topics and engage in class social discussions.

1. Open your web browser. Go to http://www.nabble.com and select 'Start a Free Forum.'

2. Register for a free account.

Complete all fields:

1. 'User Name' (not necessarily your real name). If this is a new account, you can establish whatever you like (pastrychef2013, etc.)

2. Your email.

3. Create your password.

4. You must agree to the Terms and Conditions. Always read these before joining any site.

5. Choose your language.

6. Define your content.

7. Choose the name for your forum.

8. The 'Description' is optional, but it's a good idea to provide one.

9. Number and letter characters are embedded in this image. Decipher them and type in the input box on the right.

10. When you're sure that you have entered all the information, click 'Create Forum.'

Upon successful registration, Nabble will send you a confirmation email. Open the message and click on the confirmation link. Your new discussion board will open.

Now begins the process of embedding your new discussion board on a wiki page. The discussion board is designed to occupy the entire width of the wiki page, but if you wish to confine it to a lesser width, you'll need to embed it in a fixed-width table cell. Decide on location and size for the discussion board, and begin the steps below:

 3. Click the 'New Messages' button on your discussion board. The 'embed' source code will appear

or

Click on Options in the top right corner > Embed code

4. Copy the 'embed' source code.

5. Go to the wiki page that will contain the discussion board. Click 'EDIT.' Decide where you want the discussion board to appear, and click at that location.

6. On the Toolbar, click 'Insert' and select 'HTML/Javascript.'

7. Paste the 'embed' source code in the input box. Click 'Next.'

 8. Click 'Insert Plugin.'

9. This is what your 'EDIT' page will look like if you have successfully installed the plugin. Save your work.

10. Congratulations! Now your students can participate on the discussion board without leaving your wiki site!

Only the administrator can embed the discussion board on this site. Writers will only be able to create links with the plugin.
