Inviting Participants to Your Wiki - Adding and Sharing Username and Password

Objective: Adding one other participant to your wiki by generating a username and password.

Wikis are social networking spaces. They are meant to be shared. After adding the needed content for class, you should invite other participants and your students.

Task 1: Create a Classroom Account

     1. Click the Users tab at the top of the workspace.

     2. Click  .

3. Click on the link "create accounts for your students" which appears in the Add Users popup box.

4. The next step is to create the classroom accounts. For this exercise, you will create only one account, which will be for your partner.

  • In the diagram on the right, field #1 is the number of students. Put a "1" in this box.
  • Field #2 is the role/permission to be assigned. Choose "Writer."
  • Field #3 indicates that you'll need a printer for this procedure. Normally this is true, but today you'll just write down the username and password assigned by the wiki software.
  • Field #4 the "Continue" button, which will take you to the next step.

5. Now you can set the account details for your soon-to-be wiki partner.

  • Field #1 (optional) is your partner's name. We recommend that you fill it in.
  • Field #2 is the role/level of permission. choose "Writer."
  • Field #3 is the username. If you leave this field alone, the username will be wikiuser001. If you click in the field, the wiki software automatically supplies the partner's name from Field #1.
  • Field #4 is the password generated by the wiki software

Normally, you could create and print a large number of classroom accounts. Today you are creating only one, so write down the Username and the Password in the spaces provided.

User Name___________________________     Password ____________________________

6. This step requires you to confirm the details of the account. These details match the input that you and the wiki software provided in the previous step.

Double-check this information against the Username and Password that you wrote down. If they are correct, you can proceed. If not, ensure that what you wrote matches the Username and Password provided by the wiki software.

7. Normally you could print a list of participants with corresponding usernames and passwords. For this exercise, you don't need to do that. Just click on the "Users" tab and verify that the account has been created.

8. Now you're ready for your partner to join your wiki site. Give your partner the url of your wiki (http://yourwikiname.pbworks.com), along with the partner's Username and Password.

For example, when you type http://frederictontoday.pbworks.com, you'll see this login screen.

Task 2: Logging in to a shared site

Now let's see if your classroom account information works. From the pbworks login page, login to your partner's wiki using the Username and Password that your partner has provided to you.
