Embedding Objects General Information

Objective: Become familiar with the process of embedding Video, Audio, Web 2.0 tools with HTML/Javascript

This tutorial shows how to embed tools in the wiki and explores the kinds of tools you can choose.

Wikis allow you to embed, or place, objects directly into a page, allowing for interaction and collaboration without leaving the site.  In order to embed an object (which includes audio, video, discussion boards, Web 2.0 tools), you must first be able to obtain an Embed code after you create the object you would like to embed on your Wiki site.

Once you have an Embed code, here are the steps to embed:

1. Click on Edit to place your Wiki in Edit mode

2. Click on the Insert Tab.  A dropdown box appears with several options for types of tools you can embed.

3. Selecting Video, HTML/JavaScript, and More plugins allow you to embed objects on your wiki page.

A. Embed using Video Option

 1. Select Video.  A box appears with three choices:  YouTube, Other, Upload Video (available only on PBWorks paid subscriptions).

 2. If you select YouTube, a box appears to enter the Embed code from a YouTube Video.

 3.  If you select Other... a box appears to enter the URL from other oEmbed sites.

*oEmbed is a format for allowing an embedded representation of a URL on third party sites.

B. Embed using HTML/JavaScript Option

 1. Select HTML/JavaScript.  The Insert Plugin box appears.  Enter the embed code from the object you created (any object such as YouTube, Voki, Nabble, Google Gadget)

 2.  Click "next".  The plugin appears as a green bar.

 3. Click "Insert Plugin".  The green bar appears on the wiki site.

 4. Click the Save button at the bottom of the page.  Your object is now ready for viewing. In this example, the object is a YouTube video.

C. Embed using More Plugins

 1. Select "More Plugins.  A box appears with a list of options:  HTML & Gadgets (embed Google Gadgets, RSS, Twitter Widgets) and Interactive Media (embed SKYPE)

 2. Select the object you want to embed and follow the prompts for each to embed.  Below are sample screenshots for some of the objects.
